23/12/2006 The first Kidney Transplantation operation conducted by a Kurdish medical team |

At Zhin Private Hospital in Erbil, and through a Kurdish Urologists medical team, a Kidney transplantation operation was made for a 21 years old patient named "Kurdistan".
The operation was done by 3 kurdish specialists:
1- Assistant Professor Dr. Pishtewan Hashim Bazzaz, Urology specialist Surgeon
2- Dr. Yousif Farook Barzangi, a Urology Specialist Surgeon
3- Dr. Daood Hasan Ramazan, a nephrologist
The importance of this event lies in the fact that it is the first time a kidney transplantation operation is conducted in Kurdistan without the assistance or the presence of any other physicians from abroad or from other regions of Iraq.

8/11/2006 HMU signs a Memorandum of Understanding with Tabriz University of Medical Science in Iran |

Following an invitation from Dr. Pishtewan Al-Bazzaz, the President of HMU, a delegation from (Tabriz University of Medical Science) in Iran visited Hawler Medical University in Erbil. The deligation, headed by the president of the TUMS, Dr. Ahmed Ali Khalili, had the chance to visit the four colleges that belongs to HMU. After that they met the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Minister of Health in the Kurdistan Regional Government as well as the President of HMU, the Vice Presidents and the deans of HMU colleges were they discussed some of the main health and academic issues in our region and shared their experience while dealing with these problems.
In the last day of their visit, the TUMS had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with HMU for developing mutual cooporation in training, treatment, health management, and education

23/8/2006 Visit of Egypt companies delegation to HMU |

|
A delegation from the United Arab Company for Training and Administrative Consulting and United Arab Company for Selling and Importing in Egypt visited HMU and met the president of HMU.
During the meeting, the visiting delegation presented the activities and programs of the two companies and their willingness to enter in partnership with HMU in order to carry out training activities for HMU staff and supply of books and other study resources to HMU colleges.

During his latest visit to Iraqi Kurdistan, Dr. Gazi Zibari the famous Kurdish Professor of Surgery and Organ Transplantation Specialist in Louisiana State dedicated his time to carry out a number of surgical operations in each of Dahuk, Erbil and Sulaimania governorates. With his efficiency and experience he could help many patients especially those whose conditions could not be treated inside the country due to many reasons. In addition to this great assistance to the patients, he was able to share his experience with surgeons in the region.

Under the auspices of H.E. Dr. Idris Hadi Salih, the Minister of Higher
Education and Scientific Research, with the attendance of H.E. Dr. Abdulrahman
Othman, the Minister of Health and a number of officials, HMU celebrated its
first graduation round under the name of "Kurdistan Development" round.
During the ceremony, certificates were granted to the graduated
students and prizes were distributed among the first three graduates of each
college.
During the study year 2005-2006, 45 students have graduated from
postgraduate studies while 204 students have obtained graduate degree from the
four colleges; 87 students from the College of Medicine, 31 students from the
College of Dentistry, 33 students from the College of Pharmacy and 53 students
from the College of Nursing.

H.E. Dr. Idris Hadi Salih, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government attended the 7th meeting of HMU University Council on 7th June 2006. H.E the Minister appraised the establishment of HMU and supported the idea of specialization reform in Kurdistan universities. He reiterated his support to HMU and the education process in the universities. He briefed the Council members on the major steps taken in the process of establishment of the new ministry and the ongoing process of establishing the ministry law and structure.

4/6/2006 HMU participated in Iraqi Development Program at the University of Nottingham |

A team from HMU together with the Kurdistan universities' delegation participated in the Iraqi Development Program at the University of Nottingham between Monday 22nd May and Friday 2nd June 2006. The program concentrated on strategic themes relating to management, governance and teaching and research at the University of Nottingham, and the session was led by senior members of the university staff. This is the third such program arranged by the University of Nottingham for Iraqis.
HMU team consisted of Dr. Abdulrahman Rasul, Vice President for Scientific Affairs and Postgraduate Studies, Dr. Farhad Khayat, Dean of College of Medicine and Dr. Jafar Kader Hamad, Dean of College of Dentistry.

Two delegations from the Iraqi Council for Medical Specialties; ENT and Orthopedics, visited Erbil in order to explore possibilities of opening Council centers in Erbil. During the visit, the delegations visited the teaching hospitals in Erbil and checked the available facilities and teaching staff. They also visited MHU and the college of medicine and held extensive and fruitful discussions. It is worth to mention that the Iraqi Council for Medical Specialties has already a number of training centers in Erbil including surgery, internal medicine, psychology, pediatrics, urology, radiology and anesthesia.

A delegation consisting of a number of medical doctors from the Kurdish Doctors' Association in Germany visited HMU and met the president and vice president of HMU. During the meeting, the president of HMU briefed the delegation about the medical education system and the health system in Kurdistan shedding lights on main challenges these systems are facing. The two parties explored the possibilities of future mutual collaboration in education, training and research.

H.E. Mr. Idris Hadi Salih, the newly assigned Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Kurdistan Regional Government visited HMU on 9 May 2006. During a meeting with the president of HMU, H.E. was briefed about the objectives and reasons behind establishment of HMU, the main achievements accomplished so far and the main challenges HMU and the education process are facing. H.E. the Minister reiterated his full support to HMU and the university education process in Kurdistan.

Physicians of Canada is going to implement the ALARM International Project in Iraqi Kurdistan |

HMU and the ministry of health signed a partnership agreement with the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada. Under this agreement, the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada will implement the ALARM (Advance in Labour Risk Management) International Project in Iraqi Kurdistan. The ALARM International Project is developed as a training/mobilizing tool to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity in developing countries. Its main objectives are (1) to review the essential of obstetrical care during labor and delivery that may lead to maternal mortality and morbidity and (2) to sensitize and mobilize health professionals to the social, economical, cultural and legal factors which inhibit women’s access to services and further, offer solutions for the improvement of maternal mortality programs. The implementation of the project in Kurdistan is supposed to start near the end of 2006 for a period of 2 years.

Zanco Journal of Medical Sciences is presently issued twice a year, and welcomes research papers with scientific merit and originality. These include basic medical sciences and clinical researches as well as case reports, review articles, short communications and bibliographies. Such disciplines should be of special interests of medical practice in Iraqi Kurdistan region in particular, and in the other areas of Iraq.
Volume 9 No. 2, year 2005 has been published which contains 11 researches conducted by university faculty members.

30/1/2006 Enrichment of the libraries at the four colleges with books and teaching CDs purchased from Egypt International Book Fair |

A HMU delegation headed by Dr. Abdulrahman Rasul, Vice President for Scientific Affairs and Postgraduate Studies attended the Egypt International Book Fair in January 2006. The delegation purchased around 450 books and resources for the four colleges of HMU in order to fill the gaps at the libraries and enrich the libraries with valuable and new resources. During the same visit, the team visited Cairo University and held a meeting with the Vice President of Scientific Affairs and Academic Relations where possible mutual collaborations were discussed.
