6/7/2007  Pediatric and Adult Hospital Infection Control:
   
 
 

At 9 am 29th May, 2007, the president of Hawler Medical University Assistant Prof. Dr. Pishtewan Hashim Al- Bazzaz, welcomed the attendants in the opening session of the course of Pediatric and Adult Hospital Infection Control, as a continuous activity of the Iraqi CME center in Erbil.

 

The 3 days course included lectures by the participants; while the 3rd day was allocated for a field tour in Maternity and Pediatric Hospital. The evening session course included lectures and course on line with Dr. Victoria Fraser/ President of the Society for Hospital Epidemiology of USA. 

 

Dr. John Podgore, Dr. Barbara Aktinson and Dr. James Brien, the team of physicians from USA, presented their fruitful lectures in this course.

Participants from Erbil, Dohuk, Mosul, Kirkuk and Basra have been participated, the total number was 63.

 

Further more. The course mainly aimed at updating physicians' knowledge about the methods of infection control in Iraqi hospitals; meanwhile participants submitted to a pretest to assess their knowledge as part of continuing medical education.

 

As a conclusion of this course the participants will submit on line to a pre and post- conference test, successful participants will be awarded certificate from the Society for Hospital Epidemiology of USA.

 

In addition, Hawler Medical University awarded the certificate of attendance to the participants.

28/4/2007  The Annual Scientific Conference of Students` Project
   
 
 

On 19 April 2007, the College of Medicine hosted the first Annual Scientific Conference of Student's Project. This conference aimed to present a couple of researches done by a group of 4th year Medical Students and was supervised by the Department of Internal and Community Medicine.

 

The conference began with a welcoming speech by the Dean of the College, Assistant Prof. Dr. Farhad Jalil Al-Khayat, followed by a speech from the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Edris Hadi Salih. The Minister was impressed by having this conference which, conducts for the first time in Kurdistan, and would open the chance of having more similar conferences within all Colleges in Kurdistan. He expressed his wishes of having more researchers presented in the future and proposed to record those students' researchers in order to have an advantage when submitting for graduate study in the future.

 

The Minister's speech followed by the speech of the President of Hawler Medical University, Assistant Prof. Dr. Pishtewan Al-Bazzaz. His speech best described as a welcoming and encouraging one.

 

A short break came with visiting the exhibition done by some of the medical students, and then followed by presenting the researches.

17/4/2007  Refreshing course of OBGYN in HMU as the first activity of Iraqi Continuous Medical Education (CME) Center in Erbil, 17th-19th, April, 2007
   
 
 

At 9 am 17th April, 2007, on behalf of Minister of Higher Education, the president of Hawler Medical University Dr. Pishtewan Hashim Al-Bazaz, welcomed the attendants in the opening session of the conference of refreshing course of OBGYN as the first IRAQI CME Center activity in Erbil.

Dr. Kamal Kirkuki, deputy of the Kurdistan National Assembly gave a speech and expressed his support and KNA's to this program.

 An eighty obstetrics and gynecologist from Erbil, Dohuk, Sulaimanina, Mosul, and Kirkuk participated in this Conference, out of 80, twelve of them were trainers, while the remained were trainees.

Tow specialties from USA, Dr. Martin Olsen and Dr. Randall Williams participated in this course and they played an important role to achieve one of the CME Center Objectives, which is updating knowledge.

The course started from 17th April and lasted for 3 days, the last day was a practical session at the operating room in Maternity Hospital in Erbil. The course has been focusing on the following aims:

  1. Refreshing and updating the knowledge,
  2. Establishing a Northern Iraqi Specialty Societies that compile OBGYN specialties in Kurdistan Region, Iraq,
  3. Establishing a link and communication between OBGYN specialties in Iraq and those of USA,

28/12/2006  Iraqi Medical Education & Training Center Leadership Forum
   
 
 

 Hosted by Hawler Medical University,  the International Medical Corps (IMC), in partnership with the Medical Alliance for Iraq (MAI) organized a 3-day conference in Erbil between December 5th and 7th 2006.  The conference brought the senior elements of the Iraqi medical system together with international physicians from the US and UK (MAI). The focus of the conference was to compile a comprehensive list of Continuing Medical Education (CME) needs for the creation of the northern campus of the Medical Education and Training Centers of Iraq, (METCI) in the Erbil area of Kurdistan. The METCI will serve to provide CME and training, and will also house conference facilities for lectures, courses, panels and AV presentations. Additional facilities such as operation theatres for performing surgical procedures would be an integral part of the METCI. The center will also be equipped with an E-Learning Center, a library and a Telemedicine unit.

12/7/2006  HMU first graduation ceremony
   
 
 
Under the auspices of H.E. Dr. Idris Hadi Salih, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, with the attendance of H.E. Dr. Abdulrahman Othman, the Minister of Health and a number of officials, HMU celebrated its first graduation round under the name of "Kurdistan Development" round.

During the ceremony, certificates were granted to the graduated students and prizes were distributed among the first three graduates of each college.

During the study year 2005-2006, 45 students have graduated from postgraduate studies while 204 students have obtained graduate degree from the four colleges; 87 students from the College of Medicine, 31 students from the College of Dentistry, 33 students from the College of Pharmacy and 53 students from the College of Nursing.

12/5/2006  Human resource development and training
   
 
 
In May 2006, ten staff members from HMU and its four colleges attended a training program organized by the United Arab Company for Training and Administrative Consulting in Egypt. The team was trained on internet and accounting. Earlier in April, 2 HMU staff members attended a course on scientific ways and methods in managing human resources in Sharm EL.Shiekh in Egypt.

10/5/2006  With the assistance of WIRED International, instalment and testing of videoconference facilities in Rezgari Hospital in Erbil
   
 
 

With the support of WiRED International, video-teleconferencing facilities have been installed at Rezgari teaching hospital and tested with Massachusetts General Hospital at Boston and West Pacific Medical Center at San Francisco and Harvard. The program is intending to have communication with important centres in the world with the aim of medical education through holding different sessions and case presentation.

1/5/2006  Final examinations / External examiners
   
 
 
The theoretical examinations for the last stage in college of medicine have started on 27 May 2006. The practical examination is supposed to start beginning of June and will be attended by external examiners from other Iraqi universities and Kurdish doctors working abroad. On the other side, the education program in the four colleges has been extended for 2 extra weeks to compensate the frequent holidays manifested in March.

18/4/2006  National and international efforts to establish an Iraqi Medical Education and Training Center in Erbil
   
 
 
With the support of Medical Alliance for Iraq (MAI, US and UK) and the International Medical Corps (IMC), HMU intended to organize a 3-day conference in Erbil between April 18th and 20th 2006, to bring senior elements of the Iraqi medical system together with international medical experts from the US and UK (MAI). The focus of the conference was expected to compile a comprehensive list of Continuing Medical Education (CME) and postgraduate medical education needs for the creation of the first internationally recognized Medical Education and Training Center in Iraq (METCI) and support of the existing training centers. The plan was to have approximately 16 international and 100 Iraqi doctors from various fields of expertise within the health sector attending the conference. Apart from live demonstrations for CME, Telemedicine & E-Learning, the conference was supposed to focus on the role and interface of professional societies and the future of the METCI. The role of Licensure and Specialty Certification Boards in facilitating appropriate credentialing and accreditation, and the relationship with government bodies would have been also a vital part of the discussions. Unfortunately and due to some technical problems related to participation and support of the Iraqi Ministry of Health, the conference has been postponed to further notice.
